Let's learn

Poker Hand Rankings

No matter the format, be it Texas Hold ‘em or Omaha, in Poker all suits are ranked equally. However, players must make the best possible combination to have a winning hand. Poker hands ranked from highest to lowest:

Royal Flush

The highest hand in a game of Poker, it is also known as a Royal Routine. A straight run of card from ten to ace in the same suit. (A-K-Q-J-10)

Straight Flush

In a straight flush, there are five consecutive cards all belonging to the same suit. The lowest possible straight flush is A-2-3-4-5 while the highest possible straight flush is 9-10-J-Q-K. However, technically a Royal Flush is also a straight flush and is the highest. In case two players have a straight flush, the player with the higher ranking flush wins.

Four of a Kind

Four cards, all of them are of the same rank. If two or more players have four of a kind hand, then the player with higher four of a kind hand wins. For instance, four deuces (2) cannot beat any other four of a kind hand. Similarly, no other four of a kind hand can beat four aces (A) (For instance, A-A-A-A-K vs 10-10-10-10-K; the four a kind with aces wins).

Full House

Also known as a full boat, in a full house hand, there are three cards of the same rank and a pair (two cards) of similar rank. In case two or more players hold a full house, the highest ranking three of a kind card will determine the winner. Three deuces cannot beat any other deuces, and any other full house cannot be at three aces. For instance, (A-A-A-4-4 vs K-K-K-Q-Q; the three of a kind with aces wins).

Flush

Any five cards of the same suit. The highest card in hand will determine the rank of flush among other flushes. A flush with an ace will beat any other flush regardless of other cards in each hand. In case two players hold a flush, then the hands are compared card-to-card until one hand wins because of a higher card.

Straight

Five consecutive cards in different suits. An ace here can be the highest or lowest card in hand. In case two or more players hold a straight hand, the hand with the highest starting card wins. For instance, 10-9-8-7-6 vs A-2-3-4-5; the first hand will win despite an ace in the second hand.

Three of a Kind

Three cards are of the same rank irrespective of the suit paired with two other cards. In a game where two or more players have a three of a kind hand, the player with the higher ‘three of a kind’ hand wins. Aces are the highest set, while deuces (2) are the lowest set. For instance, A-A-A-Q-10 vs Q-Q-Q-K-10; the player with aces set wins.

Two Pair

In this hand, there are two pairs of two cards with the same rank, for instance, A-A-Q-Q-7. In a situation, when multiple players are holding two-pair hands, the one with the highest ranking hand wins. For example, 3-7-7-Q-Q beats 3-8-8-J-J. However, in case both players have a similar pair, the next pair becomes the deciding factor. For instance, 2-10-10-K-K will beat 5-9-9-K-K. In situation if two players have two similar pairs, the deciding factor is the ranking of the last card, for example, A-A-9-9-7 will beat A-A-9-9-4.

One Pair

Any two cards with the same rank, for instance, A-A-7-2-8. In this hand, there are three mixed cards and a pair of cards. In case two or more players hold a similar pair, the hand with the higher pair wins. For example, K-K-8-5-3 will beat K-K-7-5-2.

High Card

Five cards that are non-consecutive and non-matched with varying suits. The highest card is the highest hand here, for instance, A-2-7-J-3. If two or more players have a similar high card, the winner is decided basis the next high card. For example, K-J-8-3-2 will beat K-10-6-4-5.
